The Constitutional Club….a brief History

The Club was originally formed in 1911, in a small building in the High Street of Crowborough and with there already being a Conservative Club and Social Club in the town, it was named the Constitutional Club and stayed in that building until 1926.

That was the year the Club moved to its present home on the corner of Crowborough Cross. The building was originally stables for the horses that pulled coaches mainly taking people from London to the South Coast, and one of the stopping points was the Cross Hotel (now Wetherspoons). The horse teams were swapped over regularly, the Cross being one of those places, and the horses were rested in the building that is now our home.

The Club was originally flanked by a bakers (between the Club and Wood and Pilcher) and a butchers (now Bennetts) when the Club started on its present site. It also owned the land right to the roadside outside the Club with this area later being sold to the local council, who went on to create the Cloakes corner garden and erect the Conan Doyle statue.

There have been various updates and extensions to the Club over the years, with the games room re-development carried out in 1996, and the main lounge re-development being carried out in 2006 which sees the Club in its present form.

The Club has recently added the facility to erect a new temporary stage for musical entertainment within the games room area, and has always kept a ‘snug’ and gallery area for members and guests to enjoy a quiet drink in a more private area within the Club’s main lounge.

In 2016 we introduced our Friday Night Take Away event, when on every Friday evening, members may bring in the take away of their own choice and enjoy it in the comfort of the Club with their family and friends and this has proved an extremely popular addition for the Club.

Club Refurbishment 2006

In 2006 the Club invested in a major refurbishment of the lounge to refresh what had become a rather tired area. We also created a new front entrance from London Road to help make the Club more welcoming to both Members and Visitors. The result is what you see today; an airy, open space where Members and their Guests can relax and socialise in comfort.

Click on the image below to see an album of photos of the project throughout the refurbishment.

Members and their guests are welcome to use all these Club facilities, and we boast teams in the local Snooker, Crib and Darts leagues, all of whom have been extremely successful over many years.

Please ask the staff about joining any team and they will put you in touch with the relevant team captains.
